The audio book Pukapuka Kōrero Tahi is the result of many years of research by Dr Joseph Te Rito as a Principal Investigator at Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga. It features the voices of kuia Apikara Rārere and Te Arahea Robin and is drawn from the storehouse of oral archives of Radio Kahungunu.

This precious and unique taonga is a bilingual resource for teaching and learning Te Reo Māori, documenting recorded conversations between the two kuia and focused on strengthening Rongomaiwahine-Kahungunu dialects through archival recording as well as promoting conversational Māori language.

How to use this resource

These sound files and the associated book can be used in a variety of ways.

1. The most basic use involves simply playing the audio files (below) so that the voices of the two elderly women pervade the household, workplace or classroom. By merely playing the recording in the background, learners’ ears will become better attuned to the sound of the Māori language. They learn subliminally; they need not necessarily listen actively all the time. Please note that the recordings are in seperate audio files chapter sections because of the volume of material they contains i.e. 3–4 hours of recorded material. 

2. Taking a more proactive approach, learners can start to follow the transcription (within the written book) in parallel with the recording. This is a useful exercise as many learners find it difficult to distinguish where words begin and end in a normal barrage of speech from the likes of a native speaker. Having both the sound and the text enables them to develop their aural comprehension, reading and pronunciation skills.
